Family Outreach Ghana aims to improve the lives of the poor and disadvantaged youth and children in all areas of Ghana by providing education and training to empower them and improve their future job prospects.

In Ghana there is no free universal education and many parents are not financially able to pay school fees, leaving many young children sitting around at home or wandering the streets with no hope for the future.

Consequently, among other programs, Family Outreach Ghana established a community school in Accra in 2005 which offers free or highly subsidised education for primary school age children. Children receive good-quality basic education, and In addition a strong command of the English language which will give them a big advantage and will open many more doors of opportunity for them.

The school started from humble beginnings in the garage of a house rented by the organisation, but, thanks to donations from Family Care Foundation, and from land granted by the local traditional ruler and other help from members of the community, we acquired property and built our own school.

However until recently we lacked sufficient classrooms for students to complete their full primary school, which meant that children had to transfer to other schools in the middle of their primary education, causing problems for both children and parents.

Firstly it is difficult to even find another school for the children to transfer to as there are not enough schools in Ghana. Even if successful, the children have to adjust to conditions at their new schools, many of which are very overcrowded, and the parents are made to feel uncomfortable by the schools taking on their son or daughter, who imply that it is a big inconvenience. Finally, the parents have to find the money for the school fees which is often very difficult because of their financial circumstances.

As a major step towards our ultimate goal, Family Outreach Ghana undertook adding classrooms alongside the existing school buildings, courtesy of a grant from Family Care Foundation which covered building the extension for a complete primary school.
