Family Educational Services Year End Report
Deaf Reach Training Centers
Accomplishments: DRTC – Karachi
- DRTC Karachi completed its 5th year of successful operation, providing
free education to the Deaf. (Capacity – 90 students)
- Pick and drop transport service was started for deaf girls and children.
- IT lab was expanded to accommodate more students for training.
- IT program begun for Deaf girls and young children.
- Baldia Town Project started – 25 very poor Deaf children bussed
in daily for classes.
- Deaf Reach had a complimentary stall at ITCN Expo promoting Deaf
Education and Awareness. Over 15,000 visitors stopped at the stall for
information and discussion.
- Our DRTC principal attended a one week international conference on
Deaf Education held in Seoul, South Korea

Lively sign language discussions take place at our Deaf Reach
library and class room.

Accomplishments: DRTC – Lahore
- DRTC Lahore completed it’s 1st year of successful operation,
providing free education to the Deaf. (Capacity – 50 students)
- Certificate Award ceremony held for first class of 35 students at
Pearl Continental Hotel.
- Jobs in good companies were found for older Deaf students seeking
employment.

Goals for Coming Year
- Expansion of Pick/Drop Transport service to allow more Deaf children
to attend classes.
- We look forward to adding an additional classroom to the Centers in
both Karachi and Lahore in order to accommodate the requests for more
admissions.
- In January we will begin Sign Language classes, as well as a teacher’s
training program for those who desire to work with the Deaf.
- To expand our present program at the Center. We have requests to take
in 20 Deaf children from Orangi Town, and 30 from Korangi who otherwise
have no access to an education.
Needs for Coming Year
- We require three 15-seater diesel vans to meet the needs of transporting
the children.
- Visual teaching equipment: Multimedia projectors, VCR’s, large
screen TV’s.
- We require 40 computers to meet the need of increased enrollment
in both Centers.
- Sponsorship for the Student Scholarship Program in order to continue
to provide free education for underprivileged Deaf children.
- Sponsorship of furnishings to set up 2 new classrooms; 1 in Karachi,
and 1 in Lahore.
- We require additional premises on or near to Sharah-e-Faisal to accommodate
more students from the greater metropolitan Karachi area.
Eduserve Training Program
Accomplishments
- 36 Courses, Workshops, and Seminars were conducted for 2,042 teachers,
administrators, and parents. These courses were conducted in Karachi,
and in rural areas of the Punjab and NWFP.
- 4 training workshops were conducted for 50 plus teachers of ABSA School
for the Deaf, Karachi.
- Ongoing training course was carried on for teachers of ACELP center
for mentally challenged children, Karachi.
- The Youth Leadership Program was started in Karachi for 30 young volunteers.
Monthly leadership seminars were organized. The attendees also participated
in hands-on community service activities.
- MOTIVATED, an inspirational magazine, was launched countrywide with
the printing and distribution of the first 3 issues.
- 3 issues of “The Family Educator” newsletter were printed
and distributed countrywide.
- 796 “Treasure Attic” and “Kiddie Viddie”
educational videos were donated to various institutions for underprivileged
children in all 4 provinces. [20,000 videos sponsored since 1992!]
Goals for Coming Year
- To conduct 15 week-long training courses for teachers, administrators
and parents - particularly targeting underprivileged schools in both
urban and rural areas.
- To conduct further seminars & training programs for teachers and
parents who work with mentally handicapped, deaf & other disadvantaged
children.
- To expand the Volunteer Leadership Program to include more local volunteers.
- The continued development and creation of new teaching aids and teacher
training materials.
- Widespread distribution of MOTIVATED in schools and elsewhere throughout
the country.
- To put “Treasure Attic” and “Kiddie Viddie”
on national or cable TV, translated into Urdu, with a goal to provide
character-building quality material for children’s viewing.
Needs for Coming Year
Community Services
Accomplishments
- In February, for the 2nd year running, we organized a benefit musical
event for 1800 handicapped and disadvantaged children from 14 various
schools and institutions in the Karachi metropolitan area.
- In July, for the 4th consecutive year, we organized and conducted
a one-week summer camp for 150 orphan children at the SOS village in
Malir.
- 30 local volunteers helped to plan, organize and run the SOS Summer
Camp. These same volunteers also assisted in our weekly visitation and
teaching program at the Village.
- Maria Paola received the “Lifetime Achievement Award”
conferred by the Nazim of Karachi at a ceremony organized by Idarah
Waqar i Adab at the Avari Hotel, December 15.
- We participated in, and helped to organize volunteers for the 6th
National Special Olympics Games held in Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad.
- In Karachi, our performing group “Heartbeat!” did 72
shows for more than 40,000 people throughout the year.
- In Islamabad and Lahore, similar shows were conducted by “The
Fantastic Friends” and “Dosti” in various schools,
hospitals for cancer patients, and other institutions for approximately
15,000 children.
- Visitation and a benefit show was carried out at 3 Children’s
Hospitals; particularly to those suffering from debilitating illness
such as cancer etc.
Goals for Coming Year
- To organize the SOS Summer Camp next July
- To continue events such as the Special Olympics and further hospital
visitation programs.
- Increased Youth Leadership activities and training.
- We look forward to organizing an greater number of benefit musical
programs, particularly a large event for handicapped and underprivileged
children next March.
Needs for Coming Year
- Sponsorship of Benefit Musical Program to be held for 2000+ handicapped
children in March.
- Sponsorship for SOS Summer Camp next July; for materials, snacks,
transport and excursions.
- We have need of two 15-seater vans for transportation of the children
at special events, as well as for our Youth Leadership program, and
HeartBeat! benefit shows.
- 2 good quality smaller vehicles as our work takes us to the far reaches
of the city.
