Deaf Reach Academic Training
The basis of educating a deaf person begins with their learning to communicate.
Deaf children in particular may not have had any training whatsoever when it comes to sign language, not even being able to communicate with their parents. Basically all sign language originates as a grassroots development in a given community, but in cultures where the deaf are regarded as “handicapped”, it is all too easy for them to be totally shut out of the hearing world with no stimulus whatsoever presented to them.
Learning sign language immediately thrusts a deaf child from a silent world into a language-filled environment, full of untold knowledge and wonders. Thus once these children, as well as any deaf person, learn to use sign language, all too often they become avid learners and just surge forward into this world that has been unavailable to them, especially when they receive this opportunity for free training and education.
In the Deaf Reach program, all ages from younger children on up also learn touch typing on a computer (probably the first they’ve ever used, or in some cases seen!).
Children begin with educational games, and work into MS Word and Excel and/or whatever fields of interest is best matched up with their aptitudes.
Keeping in mind that the majority of these young people have never touched a computer before in their lives, they receive state of the art education with the goal to help them enhance their quality of life by getting a better job, especially with a knowledge of the English language.
During their school course, young people also learn all the basics like social studies, mathematics, grammar, vocal training as well as science, as well as their languages and IT training.
