Central America
Help Missions

Project No: L06
Project Managers: Jose Millan and Rachel Edson

Project Managers Jose and Rachel share some of the background of Central America Help Missions:

The prevalence of violence in Guatemala today has its roots in historical values evident during the 36-year internal armed conflict that ended in 1996. Today’s escalating crime and issues relating to public security remain a matter of concern in Guatemala. The failure to bring effective prosecutions against those suspected of involvement in criminal “maras” (gangs) and organized crime has undermined faith in the rule of law and the system of justice.

Central America Help Missions was created with the belief that it is more effective to implement a preventative program rather than simply dealing with the consequences of violence and crime. Thus their Jovenes en Accion (Youth in Action) program with its target audience of teenagers at risk, and goal of investing in them through teaching morals, mutual respect and honesty.

Jovenes en Accion is a weekly program currently underway in four city orphanages focusing on character building amongst children 6 to 12 years old, and teenagers 13 to 17 years old. Jovenes en Accion is also a platform for leadership training as many youth in Guatemala are looking for community projects that they can invest their time in to better their neighborhoods.
