Ton-A-Month Club

The Korea Herald -- October 25, 1999

[Seoul Salvation] Getting involved ........

Among the expatriate community's service "entrepreneurs," few are as dedicated and resourceful as Tim Peters who founded and operates the "Ton-A-Month-Club" which works to provide direct food aid to famine stricken areas in North Korea.

Founded in 1996, Peters group raises money through private donations from Koreans, expatriates and communities in America. The group has held a number of fundraising events, including concerts and marches. The next big event will be a benefit concert given by world-renowned pianist Sam Rotman during the musician's tour of Korea next month.

As of this month the group has supplied some 55 tons of direct food aid to hard hit regions in North Korea.

Peters realizes that one of the general misgivings among the public about supporting aid to the North is the possibility that the food will not reach those in most dire need.

Working in conjunction with other aid groups including the Red Cross and the Good Friend's Network, Peters has been able to set up delivery systems which are both cost-efficient and transparent. The group has delivered corn and wheat flour directly to noodle factories in North Korea. This past June, Peters traveled to the North Korean town of Rajin to directly monitor a shipment.

The group also works in conjunction with other agencies to get the word out about the dire situation in North Korea and the pressing need for action.
