One Life Of Dedication Benefits Thousands! Mingmar Sherpa is a young married man, only 23 years old, from the remote village of Phapre, in the Everest Region of Nepal. This is a village area where over 10,000 inhabitants of predominantly Sherpa- descent live, without access to even the most basic health care facilities. Neither a single doctor nor nurse is available to the populace. This mountainous area of Nepal has accurately been described by both locals and foreign aid and development experts as one of the most remote and underdeveloped in the country. Accurate statistics are unavailable. Our FCF project based in Katmandu decided to conduct our own survey and as a result decided to build and supply a Village Health Post and train the local villagers in Community Health Care. As a first step, we sponsored Mingmar Sherpa’s tuition fees, textbooks and school supplies to attend the Basic Community Health Course offered in Katmandu. When Mingmar completed the course in October 2000, he graduated with the second highest marks in his class! He is now a trained Village Community Health Worker, able to diagnose, treat and dispense medicine for the most prevalent village illnesses, plus administer first aid to common accident victims. We do not yet have the finances to build the planned small Health Post building, so Mingmar is working out of a spare room in a participating villager’s house until such time as facilities can be built. It has now been over a year since Mingmar began providing basic medical health services to his fellow villagers. Extra medicine has been sent every few months from local sponsorship according to the need. Life sure has changed for Mingmar, and the villagers are very thankful for the great benefits this has brought to them! But the work is not over yet! For the full story click here |
