Giving the Less Privileged a Chance
at a Better Life Family Educational Services Foundation (FESF), an FCF umbrella project in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, operates several educational and community service programs in Pakistan. Two of their long time volunteers, spoke to the Gulf News about their work during a recent visit to Dubai. After graduating from university, Maria, born and educated in Rome, felt a strong calling to dedicate her life to helping others. She now resides in Karachi, her home of several years, where she assists each of FESF's three main program areas: Eduserve, Deaf Reach & Community Services. When she's not helping to conduct training programs for teachers in primary schools & institutions catering to children with special needs, she's involved with the training of hearing-impaired men and women or conducting orphanage assistance work. Daniel, who is French-Canadian, works in the north of Pakistan at FESF's branch in Islamabad. Having left behind a career in hotel management, he and his wife came to Islamabad in the early 80s and five of their nine children were born there. He is fluent in Urdu and regularly travels to remote towns all over Pakistan to train teachers in small rural schools. His wife, Joy, runs a mother-and-child health program that includes teaching expectant mothers natural childbirth classes. Daniel and Maria gave this interesting and insightful account of their work in Pakistan to Gulf News.
