Transitional Home Provides Support for Orphans Entering the Mainstream
An earlier issue of I-Care reported on the establishment of a transitional home in Romania for orphaned teen girls. The program allowed teen girls, fresh out of their orphanages, to complete their education while learning independence in a mentoring environment. Through a grant from FCF, FAVOR was able to purchase a facility in which to permanently house the program. FCF Project Manager Paul Katz reports: ”Several of the girls have gotten jobs, nothing to be taken for granted here in Bacau where there are many qualified applicants competing for each position available.” Alina's heart's desire was to care for children. She is now working with the 4-year-old autistic son of a financially-well-to-do family. Lacramiora completed her vocational training for cafeteria/confectioner work and is employed by one of the best cafeterias in the city. Georgetta has been accepted by MacDonald’s restaurant, a well-paying job here, as MacDonald’s is not at all a cheap place to eat, by local standards. Paul explains, “These girls come from difficult backgrounds, and have had to overcome even greater hurdles than others we've previously cared for. Even helping the girls get all of their legal paperwork in order was no small feat. It’s a common problem for young people raised in institutions to be missing essential documents when they need to go out into the world. Lacramiora didn’t even have a Birth Certificate. Georgetta’s only piece of identification was a temporary document which stated, ‘No place of residence.’" With the support of this program, and the involvement of caring individuals, these young women are now on the road to productive lives.
