Restored Vision

By: Jean-Luc Temmam

It was another trip to Phnom Penh, Cambodia for us, bringing some supplies for one of the orphanages that my wife and I help support.

At the orphanage, we met a boy named Kossal who was about 10 and had a very bad case of crossed eyes. One of his eyes was totally turned toward his nose, a condition that was not expected to improve. His eyesight was so impaired that he couldn't read, nor attend school.

Kosal (14 years old) with Pannee Temmam.

The director of the orphanage asked us if we could help this boy get an operation in Thailand. (See her letter below) Of course since he was an orphan there were no funds available for medical attention. Back in Thailand, we approached a surgeon from the Thai Red Cross Society in Bangkok, pleading if he would be willing to operate on Kossal for free. He agreed.

Encouraged by this outcome, we then proceeded to the local airline office to see if they would be willing to help with complimentary transportation of the child from Phnom Penh to Bangkok and back, and they too agreed.

Volunteers from Family Care in Bangkok helped receive Kossal at the airport and escorted him to the hospital where he was to be operated on. The operation went well and after a few days of convalescence he was flown back to Phnom Penh.

We visited him a short while later and his eye was so much better. We continued visiting him regularly at the orphanage, spending time with him and through doing so he learned English.

Kossal attended school and learned computer basics in the computer room and now has just gotten a job in a company who will be sharpening his computer skills and employing him afterwards.

Quite a change from the handicapped orphan we first met. Especially considering this is a society where the handicapped are overlooked.

To: Family Care

26 May

Dear Family Care, I am writing to express my deep and profound thanks to your organization for the many kindness that they have bestowed upon the children of Cambodia generally, and in particular, to the orphans at this Center.

I first met Rosey Pascarelli, Jean-Luc Temman and Julie Bentjees through friends in Phnom Penh in April 1996. They immediately offered to visit the Center, where they delightfully entertained the children with singing and games. Over the last year they have also given many gifts in the way of clothing, books, tapes and games, which are giving many hours of enjoyment to children that do not normally have much with which to amuse themselves.

But most of all, Rosey, Jean-Luc and Julie were instrumental in arranging for the Red Cross in Bangkok to operate on one of the young boys. Hour Kosal went to Bangkok at end of last year for the operation which was very successful. Your Family Care members, saw the need and acted upon it and for this, on behalf of Hour Kosal, I offer my most heartfelt thanks.

When Family Care people are in Cambodia, it's not just the children at my Center that benefit. I know they visit many other orphanages and institutions where they can spread Family Care generosity and love.

Please accept this letter as a tribute to the work that Family Care is doing worldwide and for the commitment that is being made to Cambodia generally.

Congratulations on a wonderful, benevolent organization which shows the Christian love at its best.
