RadioActive Productions, Kampala, Uganda
In late 1999, Chris Carruthers moved to East Africa, with the goal of addressing social issues within a contemporary Gospel message in his RadioActive Productions studio. Christopher now produces three public service programs that air in English-speaking African countries.
Chris reports: "For almost three years now, our syndicated radio show, Nubeat, has played weekly on Radio Paidha, which reaches the whole troubled area of Northern Uganda, as well as parts of Eastern Congo & Sudan. In recent months, thousands of refugees have fled to Paidha from Bunia, where local tribes have been engaged in Rwanda-style massacres. Despite the seriousness of this conflict, it has only recently caught the attention of the world media.
"We recently visited this up-country station to host some live radio programs, as well as make personal contact with listeners who had been writing us from these areas. The song that really struck a chord with listeners during the first broadcast was 'Forgive & Forget':probably not so much because of its style, but its message."
After this first show aired, several young listeners, one who had recently heard that his family had most likely been killed in Bunia, greeted Chris and team outside the studio. Chris invited these listeners to participate on his second show to help translate into the local languages as well as to give their personal accounts. Between them they had powerful personal stories of how they had miraculously risen above bitterness, hatred & revenge - effectively bringing a message of healing & hope to this war-torn region.
