Extra Mile West Africa, Accra, Ghana
Just outside Ghana's capital lies the small town of Berkuso, which can be accessed only by unpaved roads. Since there was formerly only one government school and one day-care center in this town, the Chief of Berkuso agreed to donate the land to build another school and a teachers' training center under the direction of Extra Mile. The facility is now equipped to teach 50 children, and will also soon provide classes in adult education and vocational training.
Extra Mile also hosts extended training programs with subject matter ranging from curriculum planning to health and hygiene. At the end of the programs, outstanding candidates are selected to receive further training. One of those chosen was Cynthia, a 20-year-old woman who once supported herself by selling kerosene on the side of the road. When Cynthia began her first course, she had little education and could barely read or write. During her two years in the program, she has worked hard, improved her English, and has just passed the entrance exam to a nearby vocational training college.
