Cambodia is a land of youth. A recent survey lists 41% of the population of 13 million, under the age of 14. Despite the trauma and suffering of the past 30 years, Cambodia is striving for social, educational and economic reconstruction. One particularly great need is for children’s books in the local language.
In May of 2008, we selected the Aurora series of Grandpa Jake children’s books for translation into Khmer. Each book has six captivating stories with valuable lessons, moral instruction and a fun activity book for reinforcement. With both English and Khmer text, they provide inspiring and educational reading in Khmer, plus a valuable tool for teaching English.
School enrollment ranges from over 600 students in the outlying schools, to over 3,000 in the inner city schools. To date, we have raised sponsorship to enable us to freely distribute 2,000 books, in sets of 20, to public primary schools in Phnom Penh and Siem Riep. We have also donated sets to orphanages, shelters, and children’s hospitals, making them available to tens of thousands of children.
You can help by sponsoring a set of 20 books, plus 20 activity books, for just $100 per school.
