Library and Curriculum
The VIE Program core component is the VIE Library of unique audio-visual aids, attractive picture books, a five part Peace Education book series, audio CDs, and activity booklets. This is accompanied by a holistic-approach curriculum and sample lessons to teach children interactively; weaving role play, interactive media, and activities in both English and Hindi.
After extensive research and invaluable feedback from a network of users, the program contents were selected from providers both locally and internationally. This has resulted in a valuable resource kit that can be used year after year, in a wide range of educational settings, multiplying the impact of each donated VIE Library.
Inform and Train
VIE actively promotes and advocates for character education programs in schools, particularly in institutions with children from economically challenged homes and communities. Educating teachers and volunteers in the use of the curriculum is an essential component of the project’s success. Training begins at the time of delivery of the VIE library, with an interactive show-and-tell workshop for the teachers and school administration.
Motivate and Encourage
Positive self-image is essential to acquiring and assimilating education, but positive character and values cannot be learned two-dimensionally the way most academic subjects are traditionally taught. One must experience a positive value or behavior in order to emulate it, and that is why audio/visual aids, the holistic approach, and inspired teaching are all essential to imparting formal social attributes.
Motivational workshops are organized for teachers and caretakers to highlight the invaluable role they play in shaping a child’s life, and recognize their significance and impact in their local community, city and nation. The overall objective of the workshops is to inspire educators in the art of motivating each student to achieve their personal best and comprehend their intrinsic value.
Support and Assess
VIE has established a support system which provides ongoing information and resources, advocating the need for values and character education, and showcasing the transformative effect they can have on schools and the students they serve.
The project evaluation is dynamic in its process, compiling data and user feedback regularly, and modifying the VIE Library each year for improved effectiveness. This compliments a follow-up program where VIE reconnects with a VIE Library recipient institution 6 – 12 months later to evaluate the program, answer questions and garner feedback, along with the option of providing a live hands-on classroom example using the curriculum and materials.
