In Vietnam’s challenging socio-economic climate, the need for basic computer literacy for most trades and professions has become a prerequisite. However, schools in underprivileged areas often have few, if any, working computers for the students to develop these vital skills. The establishment and development of computer literacy programs provide a positive solution in rural areas where young Vietnamese have limited educational opportunities and minimal access to computers. Hands-On Saigon has facilitated the establishment of four computer literacy centers, benefitting nearly 300 children and teenagers so far, including orphans, blind youth and socially disadvantaged rural children.
To help bridge the digital divide, students are offered instruction and practical exercises ranging from basic computer operation to more advanced skills. Through acquiring these skills, the students’ self-esteem is boosted and they are placed on the path to ultimately discover new opportunities for success in life and gainful employment in order to help their families and underprivileged communities.
