At the end of 2005, Hands-On Saigon installed a computer training center to provide the children at Ho Bung Orphanage with an opportunity to develop computer skills, thereby expanding their possibilities for brighter futures. By April 2006, the facility included 8 multimedia computers, one large and several smaller UPSs, one professional speaker system and several smaller ones, 2 printers and other needed peripherals.
The center enables the older students to at least keep up with and in some cases, actually get an edge on their high school classmates through their computer skills and internet resources at their disposal. It has also made it possible for the younger ones to enter into the increasingly digital world with their budding skills, giving them more confidence to succeed in life. The orphans learned quickly, as most children do, expressing their heartfelt gratitude and manifesting a sincere desire to master their newly acquired skills.
The well-organized class schedules include morning and afternoon study slots. The teens learn how to use word processors, spread sheet programs, multimedia, English language programs and much more. Hands-On Saigon also offered equipment installation and maintenance classes for the older students. The lessons for the younger children began with touch typing and learning basic computer skills.
The orphans and their caregivers are thankful that they have been given this opportunity to learn these necessary skills, thereby improving their prospects of keeping in step with more affluent and privileged children. Although computer skills are usually needed for even a general high school education nowadays, it has also become an important requirement for all but the lowest paying forms of employment.
