For several years Balkans Relief Mission (BRM) has been involved with programs that provide a variety of extra-curricular activities and educational opportunities for underprivileged children and teens in rural areas. The program targets children from underprivileged families, many of which are single parent homes. Selection is also based on the children demonstrating an interest to learn and a commitment to participate.
English and French lessons provide exposure to other languages and help boost self-confidence while sparking interest in differing cultures.
Art and music workshops help the children explore their creative abilities in a fun environment.
The children look forward to the recreational activities, sports and special events organized by BRM, such as “Kids Olympics”, birthday parties and outdoor picnics.
These provide additional opportunities for fun, building friendships as well as mentoring by Balkans Relief Mission staff.
Additionally, BRM offers these activities to another group of underprivileged youth in cooperation with “Biblioteka Perla.” The central aspect of this project revolves around a small (and growing) centrally-located library of meaningful and educational books in English. Local youth frequent the library and participate in activities with educational and motivational themes as well as English and French lessons. The older teenagers are also given the opportunity to participate in some of BRMs volunteer projects.
